With the bird dealer , premiered in 1891 in the Theater an der Wien, Carl Zeller (1842-1898) and his librettists created one of the most successful operettas of their time, indeed of the genre as a whole. This is probably also due to the fact that the ingredients of this well-built musical mix-up comedy are perfectly matched on the stage: a lot of rural idyll, plenty of folklore, a strong pinch of eroticism, a good portion of feeling and lots of catchy melodies like I am Christel von der Post and of course you give yourself roses in Tyrol .

If you wanted to retell the content of the popular operetta, you would get into a skid, as the characters themselves usually do not know who they are dealing with. The bird dealer Adam from Tyrol flirts with Marie without knowing that she is actually the Electress. His bride, the postman Christel, believes she is opposed to the elector when she tries to get Adam promoted to menagerie inspector. But it is the dissolute Count Stanislaus, the heavily indebted nephew of the electoral forest and wilderness master Baron Weps, who has been forced to slip into the role of the elector and brazenly exploits his new position. In the end, in any case, all complications and matters of the heart dissolve in favor.

Mit dem Vogelhändler, uraufgeführt 1891 im Theater an der Wien, schufen Carl Zeller (1842-1898) und seine Librettisten eine der gelungensten Operetten ihrer Zeit, ja der Gattung insgesamt. Das liegt wohl auch daran, dass die Zutaten dieser gut gebauten musikalischen Verwechslungskomödie bühnenwirksam im perfekten Verhältnis aufeinander abgestimmt sind: viel ländliche Idylle, reichlich Volkstümlichkeit, eine starke Prise Erotik, eine gute Portion Gefühl und jede Menge eingängiger Melodien wie Ich bin die Christel von der Post und natürlich Schenkt man sich Rosen in Tirol.

Wollte man den Inhalt der populären Operette nacherzählen, käme man ganz schön ins Schleudern, wissen doch die Figuren selbst meist nicht, mit wem sie es zu tun haben. Der Vogelhändler Adam aus Tirol flirtet mit Marie, ohne zu wissen, dass es sich bei ihr in Wirklichkeit um die Kurfürstin handelt. Seine Braut, die Briefträgerin Christel, glaubt sich dem Kurfürsten gegenüber, als sie für Adam eine Beförderung zum Menagerieinspektor erwirken möchte. Aber es ist der liederliche Graf Stanislaus, der hoch verschuldete Neffe des kurfürstlichen Wald- und Wildmeisters Baron Weps, der notgedrungen in die Rolle des Kurfürsten geschlüpft ist und seine neue Position dreist ausnützt. Am Ende jedenfalls lösen sich alle Komplikationen und Herzensangelegenheiten in Wohlgefallen auf.
