Thaïs, comme six des vingt-cinq opéras de Massenet, se situe dans un orient antique. S’inspirant d’Anatole France, l’ouvrage a triomphé dix ans après sa création. La célèbre méditation de l’acte II au violon solo a fait beaucoup pour sa postérité. Autre singularité de l’œuvre, la soprano est confrontée à un baryton et non à un ténor comme traditionnellement.
